Site Visit Schedule
The Greater Kansas City Psychoanalytic Institute (GKCPI) is preparing for a site visit by its parent organization, the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA). The dates of the visit are November 1 through 4, 2007. GKCPI is a Provisional Institute, the designation which precedes full accreditation under APsaA. Within APsaA, the Committee on New Training Facilities (CNTF) oversees each new institute via a specific subcommittee. The CNTF Kansas City Subcommittee has five members: Helene Keable, M.D. (chair); Harvey Fallitt, M.D.; Duane Dale, Ph.D.; Eva Brunkow, MSW; and Anita Schmukler, D.O. During the visit, site team members will observe activities of the Institute such as classes and committee meetings.
It is the hope of students and faculty that this visit is the penultimate visit by APsaA before the Institute is fully accredited. If the site visitors believe that the Institute has progressed sufficiently to be recommended for full accreditation, a final site visit involving the Kansas City CNTF Subcommittee and members of the Committee on Institutes (COI) which oversees established institutes will be scheduled. Full accreditation could be granted following that combined CNTF/COI site visit.
Activity Report
While the GKCPI is a small institute, its activities are numerous. Currently, there is a class of seven psychoanalytic candidates taking the second year of four years of classes. Another group of candidates will begin didactic courses in the fall of 2008. The psychotherapy training program starts a new class this fall, the first of two years. The GKCPI has also been providing psychotherapy lectures for the University of Missouri at Kansas City psychiatric residents and consultation for psychology interns at the Kansas City Veterans Administration Hospital. In collaboration with the Greater Kansas City-Topeka Psychoanalytic Center the Institute also sponsors a film series, “Searching the Psyche through Cinema”. The Institute has an Annual Retreat to review its functioning. Members of the Institute also support and participate in Center activities such as its scientific programs and Annual Dinner.
The psychoanalytic community in Kansas City is expanding and growing. We are a busy bunch and welcome new people to our group of psychoanalytic practitioners and thinkers!
