The Institute

The Greater Kansas City Psychoanalytic Institute (GKCPI) offers training in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis, both to qualified mental health professionals and to interested scholars and practitioners from other disciplines. For those who plan to practice clinical psychoanalysis, the training includes a personal analysis, a four-year seminar curriculum, and supervised experience in conducting psychoanalytic treatment with several patients. For “academic candidates” (those who do not intend to practice clinical psychoanalysis), the training is essentially the same except for the supervised cases. A recently added option is the two-year training program in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, designed for therapists who wish to enhance their skills by learning psychoanalytic principles but who do not choose to undertake full psychoanalytic training. The Institute also operates a referral service, which matches suitable patients with analysts-in-training for psychoanalytic treatment at reduced fees.

The Institute was established in 1995 as a New Training Facility of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and became a professional Institute in 2003. When the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis closed in 2001, many of its faculty members and “candidates” were absorbed by GKCPI, which currently has over 30 graduate psychoanalysts on the faculty and approximately 20 candidates in various stages of training. Distinguished visiting lecturers also contribute regularly to the curriculum. While developing its programs under the rigorous standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the Institute also works collaboratively with other local psychoanalytic organizations: the Greater Kansas City/Topeka Psychoanalytic Center, its parent organization; the Kansas City Psychoanalytic Foundation; the Kansas City Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis, a training program with other affiliations; and the Kansas City Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology, the local chapter of Division 39 of the American Psychological Association. The Institute is located at 411 Nichols Road, Suite 194, Kansas City, Missouri, 64112 and the phone number is
816/531-2600.
