Making a Case for Analytic Couple Therapy in the Treatment of Symptom Disorders

Presented by:  Dr. Richard M. Zeitner, PhD, FABP, ABPP

In general couples who present for therapy are seeking help with their communication difficulties, sexual problems, or other problems related to the relational aspects of their partnership. It is less common for a couple to present when one of the partners is simultaneously experiencing a symptom disorder, especially when that symptom is intricately tied to the couple’s conflicts. Instead, the one partner will most typically be referred for individual therapy, which may run concurrent with the couple therapy. The presenter will provide clinical material of a case which demonstrates his work with a couple, addressing his focus on the structure of the one partner’s symptom, while simultaneously working with the couple’s difficulties in relating.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After attending this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Participants should be able to discuss how certain symptoms—particularly those embedded within a couple relationship—can be treated within the context of couple therapy rather than solely within individual therapy.
  2. Participants should be able to discuss relationship dynamics, symptom dynamics, and basic treatment strategies that address both within couple therapy.
