Mr. Menninger grew up in Topeka. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and his law degree from Washburn University. He spent most of his legal career in the Missouri and Illinois Departments of Mental Health and was a Supervisory Attorney in the Kansas City Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education.  He currently teaches classes on Disability Law and the Insanity Defense at UMKC Law School and on various topics for the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning at the University of Kansas. He has had Freud’s General Introduction to Psychoanalysis and his grandfather’s books in his library for years but has yet to read them.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Explain how the relationships in the Menninger family (primarily the men) affected the development of the Menninger Clinic
  • Describe the influence of Dr. Karl Menninger on his (primarily male) descendants
